I-64 Southside Widening and High-Rise Bridge, Phase I

  • I-64 Southside Widening and High-Rise Bridge, Phase I

The goal of phase I of this major project in Hampton Roads was to construct a new high-rise bridge, immediately to the south of the existing I-64 bridge to exclusively carry I-64 west traffic toward Virginia Beach. The new fixed-span high-rise bridge featured 100-feet of vertical clearance over the river for boats, with no bridge lifts. The function of the existing high-rise bridge was modified to carry three lanes of I-64 east traffic toward I-264/Bower’s Hill over the Elizabeth River upon completion of the project. It remained in operation through the entirety of the project. This major highway expansion in Chesapeake was designed to ease traffic congestion and benefit the local economy.

Quinn Consulting Services, Inc. provided Construction Engineering Inspection (CEI) services on this project. Responsibilities included monitoring all environmental controls, and providing inspection services and oversight for anchor bolt replacements, cleaning, and painting; beam bearing plate repair, including lead paint removal and repainting; waterproofing parapet walls; and the repair, cleaning, and painting of existing bearings and draw span devices.
