As one of the highest volume interchanges in the region, the goals of this project were to increase off-ramp capacity and eliminate difficult arterial weaving movements on Northampton Boulevard. The project was completed six weeks ahead of schedule.
The acceleration lane from Northampton Boulevard to I-64-west was lengthened and the I-64 east ramp to Northampton Boulevard was realigned to a signalized “T,” to provide access to Northampton Boulevard in both directions.
The work included widening the I-64 west exit ramp to Northampton Boulevard from two lanes to five lanes (two left turns, two right turns and the existing continuous flow lane that was maintained for a more integrated movement onto Northampton Boulevard). The traffic signal at Northampton was also modified.
Quinn provided a lead field inspector and two construction inspectors for this project, that also included the installation of a box culvert with Cast-in-Place (CIP) extensions, construction of a new embankment with Lightweight Foamed Concrete Fill (LFCF), and placement of asphalt concrete pavement.
