The goal of this project was to improve connectivity and safety for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and boaters between the Borough of Ohiopyle and the 20,500-acre Ohiopyle State Park, which hosts more than 1.5 million visitors each year.
As the subcontractor to McTish-Kunkel and Associates, Quinn provided construction oversight for the project, which included widening of the roadway on Route 381 and installation of sidewalks along both directions; parking improvements and construction of a new pedestrian underpass; traffic-calming measures; railroad crossing improvements; installation of a new drainage system in the Laurel Highlands Falls Area Visitors Center parking lot, and replacement of a superstructure on the existing Route 381 bridge over the Youghiogheny River.
Bridge work activities involved dismantling the stringers and floor beams at the bridge; demolition of the old bridge deck; installation of temporary bridge bearings; construction of crane pads to use for old beam removal and setting of new beams; hoe-ramming/removing the rock for the underpass footer; and building new abutments, footers, and pier “caps.”
